GAIA-TSF_ Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Tailings Storage Facilities

El proyecto *Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Tailings Storage Facilities* (GAIA-TSF) tiene como objetivo desarrollar un prototipo de sistema que utilice la observación satelital de la Tierra y aprendizaje automático para monitorear de forma continua las instalaciones de almacenamiento de relaves (TSFs). Esta iniciativa interdisciplinaria e internacional involucra colaboración en los campos de geociencia, observación de la Tierra y aprendizaje automático, con la participación de España, Portugal, los Países Bajos, la República Checa, Zambia y Sudáfrica. El proyecto colaborará con autoridades mineras e industrias para definir requisitos técnicos y funcionales específicos, identificando variables clave para monitorear TSFs y desarrollar la detección automatizada de anomalías y riesgos. Se probarán diversos algoritmos de aprendizaje automático y profundo para crear un prototipo de monitoreo y predicción de riesgos en TSFs.

NEO-CYCLE

El proyecto NEO-CYCLE tiene como objetivo demostrar a nivel TRL6 el reciclado sostenible de imanes de NdFeB procedentes de discos duros (HDD), alcanzando productos finales de alta calidad para 4 casos de estudio: industrias farmacéutica, del amoníaco, de fertilizantes y de polímeros; e incluirá las vías necesarias para alcanzar la aceptación en el mercado. Para alcanzar este objetivo, NEO-CYCLE implica a todos los actores relevantes de la cadena de valor, desde las autoridades públicas a las empresas de reciclaje de RAEE, desarrolladores tecnológicos, asociaciones, ONG, PYME y empresas comerciales de los sectores objetivo.

La Plataforma de Servicios Mineros de Observación de la Tierra (EO) de TERRAVISION TERRAVISION establecerá y desplegará una plataforma integrada para mejorar toda la cadena de valor de las materias primas críticas con vistas a la aplicación de prácticas mineras sostenibles. Se apoyará en 4 pilares de innovación: (I) el Ecosistema de Datos para Servicios Mineros EO a gran escala; (II) datos para el análisis y biblioteca espectral de materias primas; (III) servicios de observación de la Tierra para la industria minera que desarrollarán y desplegarán servicios críticos para la cadena de suministro y también permitirán un servicio dinámico de cartografía de peligros para la gestión proactiva de riesgos con el fin de promover la eficiencia operativa de las explotaciones mineras; y (IV) el componente de responsabilidad ecológica y resiliencia fomentará la resiliencia y la sostenibilidad de la cadena de suministro de materias primas esenciales sobre la base de la cuantificación del impacto medioambiental y socioeconómico de la minería.

MaDiTraCe – Material and digital traceability for the certification of critical raw materials

El objetivo principal de MaDiTraCe es ampliar e integrar la cartera de soluciones tecnológicas que refuerzan la fiabilidad del seguimiento de materias primas críticas (CRM) y la transparencia de cadenas de suministro complejas. El proyecto tiene como objetivo desarrollar y probar enfoques digitales y geobasados independientes para la trazabilidad de CRM y para integrarlos con un esquema de certificación genérica para CRM en todas las cadenas de suministro de minerales, desde la mina hasta los productos manufacturados y reciclados. El proyecto pretende aumentar el TRL de métodos experimentales o en gran parte no probados en ambos dominios, ciencias digitales y materiales. Se prestará especial atención a la complejidad de las cadenas de suministro de minerales con puntos de agregación de materiales y de transformación (procesamiento, refinado…) incluida la economía circular (reciclado). Esta metodología permitirá a las industrias transformadoras demostrar la fiabilidad de sus declaraciones de sostenibilidad, cumpliendo con la normativa vigente (en particular, la normativa de la UE sobre baterías, la ley alemana sobre la cadena de suministro) y anticipando la futura aplicación de la normativa (Directiva de la UE sobre la diligencia debida en materia de sostenibilidad empresarial). Estos especialistas son esenciales para mantener y aumentar la resiliencia de la cadena de suministro de tierras raras en Europa. El curso utiliza un enfoque de aprendizaje combinado. El material educativo incluye 1 módulo sobre conceptos básicos de magnetismo, y 5 módulos cuyo contenido cubre aspectos críticos de la cadena de valor de los imanes de las tierras raras.

PERMANET es una red sostenible de innovación y suministro de REE que abarca toda la cadena de valor de los imanes permanentes (PM) de elementos de tierras raras (REE). La Red acelera las innovaciones de vanguardia, desde la extracción de REE de los relaves mineros y los procesos hidrometalúrgicos a la reducción de óxidos y los procesos de producción innovadores, hasta la producción de PM innovadoras y su prueba por los usuarios finales en el entorno industrial a través de 1/ E-Mobility 2/ Energy 3/ Industrial Equipment. PERMANET también asegura fuentes clave de REE, así como los sectores de fin de vida (EoL) (RAEE, EV, etc.). El proyecto desbloqueará reservas viables de REE, incluidas fuentes no convencionales, y demostrará rutas de extracción, procesamiento y separación de REE novedosas, rentables y respetuosas con el medio ambiente, además de demostrar el primer centro de la UE para tecnologías de PM circulares que se desplegarán a escala de mercado.

Con la región de Kosice en Eslovaquia que contiene el 46% de las reservas geológicas del país, y la Universidad Técnica de Kosice (TUKE) reconocida como una universidad líder en minería, WIDEX cerrará la brecha de investigación e innovación de la UE. Los 11 socios del consorcio se centrarán en mejorar las capacidades del coordinador TUKE en exploración minera, sostenibilidad y gestión de la investigación, mientras establecen un clúster de Europa Central, un Centro Virtual y una plataforma de Interesados enfocada en tecnologías verdes. S34I investigará e innovará nuevos métodos basados en datos para analizar datos de observación de la Tierra (EO), apoyando la exploración sistemática de minerales y el monitoreo continuo de la extracción, actividades de cierre y post-cierre con el objetivo de aumentar el conocimiento europeo y la autonomía sobre los recursos de materias primas. S34I utiliza el EO no solo para la gestión de cuestiones técnicas y ambientales para una transición verde, sino también para apoyar la aceptación social de la minería (SLO) y una mejor legislación. Los productos/servicios innovadores basados en EO proporcionarán cartografía/exploración minera de RM nueva o más precisa, vigilancia ambiental y minera y seguridad minera, en diferentes fases del ciclo de vida de la mina. RESiLEX: Mejora resiliente para la industria del silicio aprovechando la matriz europea (Acuerdo de subvención: 101058583)

El objetivo general del Proyecto RESiLEX es demostrar 7 soluciones tecnológicas y empresariales innovadoras que cubren toda la cadena de valor de Silicio para contribuir a mejorar la resiliencia y sostenibilidad de la misma. RESiLEX evaluará el impacto económico, social y ambiental identificando y elaborando recomendaciones de formulación de políticas de código abierto para acelerar la replicación de las que tienen el mayor potencial al mismo tiempo que se abordan los desafíos transversales de la industria minera europea en su conjunto con una octava demostración piloto transversal. El proyecto tendrá una duración de 4 años comenzando el 01/06/2022 y finalizando el 31/05/2026, disponiendo de un presupuesto de más de 10 millones de euros.

MINE.THE.GAP, liderado y coordinado por ICAMCyL, tiene como objetivo proporcionar apoyo técnico y financiero a las pymes de los sectores de las materias primas y la minería a través de la financiación directa de proyectos de innovación. Proveedores de las TIC, economía circular, fabricación avanzada y eficiencia energética se unirán al proyecto para financiar al menos 30 proyectos que beneficien a hasta 90 pymes. El ISMC participa en este proyecto como líder del paquete de trabajo de comunicación, difusión y explotación de resultados.

El proyecto hace hincapié en la participación del público en general y de las partes interesadas, combinando la innovación a varios niveles y utilizando herramientas y tecnologías de vanguardia. La iniciativa contempla el desarrollo de modelos de mineral actualizados, la mejora de las tecnologías de exploración y la creación de una plataforma de visualización. DEXPLORE también pretende reforzar la cooperación con los países socios estratégicos, estableciendo un sólido Consejo Asesor y fomentando la colaboración con otras iniciativas de la UE para realizar actividades conjuntas y compartir resultados.

El IPCC ahora reconoce el potencial tecnológico de las soluciones de CDR para limitar el calentamiento global y lograr emisiones netas negativas de gases de efecto invernadero. Sin embargo, en la actualidad existe un conocimiento limitado de la CDR y una ausencia de normas consensuadas de alta calidad sobre las tecnologías, lo que crea barreras para su despliegue adecuado en la UE. Para superar estas barreras, el proyecto C-SINK establecerá sólidas pre-estándares MRV y estrategias políticas basadas en una evaluación exhaustiva de los criterios ambientales, sociales y de gobernanza (ESG) relevantes para la CDR, facilitando el desarrollo de metodologías de contabilidad fiables.

ECHO Electrical Computerised Hammering Operator

El proyecto ECHO (Operador de Martillado Computarizado Eléctrico) es un proyecto financiado por EIT Raw Materials, una comunidad de innovación (KIC) del Instituto Europeo de Innovación y Tecnología (EIT) que tiene como objetivo garantizar el suministro de materias primas sostenibles, impulsando la innovación, la educación y el espíritu empresarial. ECHO tiene como objetivo comercializar martillos totalmente eléctricos y programables (LEH), abordar las limitaciones fundamentales de los martillos hidráulicos (HBH) y promover oportunidades relacionadas con los mercados de conmutación, la conversión de energía, la digitalización y los datos en la industria minera. El proyecto de 3 años está liderado por Lekatech en un consorcio que representa un triángulo de conocimiento completo con ISMC Cluster, MNLT, KGHM y la Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnología de Wrocław. ECHO se centra en la demostración a escala piloto del martillo eléctrico LEH en tres entornos de producción reales en Finlandia, Polonia y España en colaboración con líderes mundiales en el sector de las materias primas. Durante el proyecto, LEH llegará a TRL9, mientras se lanza y comercializa en el mercado global. ECHO dará lugar a un enfoque completamente nuevo del proceso de martilleo en la minería y proporcionará una solución innovadora, rentable, digitalizada, conectada, segura, respetuosa con el medio ambiente y fácil de usar.

The Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Tailings Storage Facilities (GAIA-TSF) project aims to develop a prototype system using satellite earth observation and machine learning to continuously monitor Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). This international and interdisciplinary initiative involves collaboration across geoscience, earth observation, and machine learning fields, with participation from Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Zambia, and South Africa. The project will engage mining authorities and industries to define specific technical and functional requirements, identifying key variables to monitor TSFs and developing automated anomaly and risk detection. Various machine and deep learning algorithms will be tested to create a prototype for TSF monitoring and risk prediction.

The NEO-CYCLE project aims to demonstrate at TRL6 the sustainable upcycling of spent NdFeB magnets comings from hard disks drives (HDDs), reaching high quality end products for 4 case studies: pharmaceutical, ammonia, fertilizers, and polymers industries; and will include necessary paths to reach the market uptake. To reach this aim, NEO-CYCLE involves all the relevant actors in the value chain, from public authorities to WEEE recycler companies, technology developers, associations, NGOs, SMEs and commercial companies in the targeted sectors.

TERRAVISION's Earth Observation (EO) Mining Services Platform TERRAVISION will establish and deploy an integrated platform to improve the entire value chain of critical raw materials for the implementation of sustainable mining practices. It will be supported by 4 pillars of innovation: (I) the Data Ecosystem for large-scale EO Mining Services; (II) data for commodity spectral library and analysis; (III) Earth observation services for the mining industry that will develop and deploy critical supply chain services and also enable a dynamic hazard mapping service for proactive risk management to promote operational efficiency of mining operations; and (IV) the ecological responsibility and resilience component will promote resilience and sustainability of the critical raw materials supply chain based on quantification of the environmental and socio-economic impact of mining.

MaDiTraCe’s main goal is to enlarge and integrate the portfolio of technological solutions reinforcing the reliability of critical raw material (CRM) tracking and the transparency of complex supply chains. The project aims to develop and test independent digital and geo-based approaches for CRM traceability and to integrate them with a generic certification scheme for CRMs throughout mineral supply chains from the mine to the manufactured and recycled products. The project intends to increase the TRL of experimental or largely untested methods in both domains, digital and material sciences. A special attention will be payed to the complexity of mineral supply chains with points of material aggregation and of transformation (processing, refining…) including circular economy (recycling). This methodology will enable downstream industrials to prove the reliability of their sustainability claims, complying with regulation in force (notably EU Battery regulation, German Supply Chain Act) and anticipating implementation of regulation to come (EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence). The educational material includes 1 module on basic concepts of magnetism, and 5 modules the content of which covers critical aspects of the RE magnet value chain.

PERMANET is a sustainable REE innovation and supply network covering the entire rare earth element (REE) permanent magnet (PM) value chain. The Network accelerates breakthrough innovations, from REE extraction from mine tailings and hydrometallurgical processes to oxide reduction and innovative production processes, to innovative PM production and testing by end users in the industrial environment through 1/ E-Mobility 2/ Energy 3/ Industrial Equipment. PERMANET also secures key REE sources as well as the end-of-life (EoL) sectors (WEEE, EV, etc.). The project will unlock viable REE reserves, including unconventional sources, and demonstrate novel, cost-effective and environmentally friendly REE extraction, processing and separation routes, as well as demonstrating the first EU hub for circular PM technologies to be deployed at market scale.

S34I will research and innovate new data-driven methods to analyse Earth Observation (EO) data, supporting systematic mineral exploration and continuous monitoring of extraction, closure and post-closure activities with the aim to increase European knowledge and autonomy on raw materials resources. S34I uses EO not only for the management of technical and environmental issues for a green transition but also to support mining’s social acceptance (SLO) and better legislation. Innovative EO-based products/services will provide new or more accurate RM mineral mapping/exploration, environmental and mine monitoring and mine safety, at different phases of the mine life cycle. The overall objective of the RESiLEX Project is to demonstrate 7 innovative technology and business solutions driven by the industry that cover the entire Silicon value chain to contribute to improving the resilience and sustainability of this critical material value chain cousins in Europe. RESiLEX will assess the economic, social and environmental impact of these solutions by identifying and providing open source policy-making recommendations to accelerate replication of those with the greatest potential, while addressing the cross-cutting challenges of the European mining industry as a whole with an eighth pilot cross-sectional demonstration. The project will last 4 years starting on 06/01/2022 and ending on 05/31/2026, with a budget of more than 10 million euros.

MINE.THE.GAP, led and coordinated by ICAMCyL Foundation, aims at providing technical and financial support to SMEs in the raw materials and mining sectors through direct finance of innovation projects. Technology providers from ICT, circular economy, advanced manufacturing and resource efficiency will be involved to finance at least 30 projects benefiting up to 90 SMEs.
ISMC is a partner of this project, leading the Work Package on Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation of project results.

The technological potential of CDR solutions to limit global warming and achieve net negative greenhouse gas emissions is now recognised by the IPCC. However, there is currently a limited understanding of CDR and an absence of agreed high-quality standards on the technologies, creating barriers to their appropriate deployment in the EU. To overcome these barriers, the C-SINK project will establish robust MRV pre-standards and policy strategies based on a comprehensive evaluation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria relevant to CDR, facilitating the development of trustworthy accounting methodologies.

ECHO Electrical Computerised Hammering Operator

The ECHO project (Electrical Computersided Hammering Operator) is a project funded by EIT Raw Materials, an innovation community (KIC) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) which aims to ensure the supply of sustainable raw materials, boosting innovation, education and entrepreneurship. ECHO aims to market fully electric and programmable breakers (LEH), to address the fundamental limitations of hydraulic breakers (HBH), and to promote opportunities related to switching markets, energy conversion, digitization and data in the mining industry.The 3-year project is led by Lekatech in a consortium that represents a complete knowledge triangle with the ISMC Cluster, MNLT, KGHM and the University of Science and Technology of Wrocław.ECHO is focusing on the pilot scale demonstration of the LEH electric hammer in three real production environments in Finland, Poland and Spain in collaboration with world leaders in the raw materials sector. During the project, LEH will arrive at TRL9, while it is launched and marketed in the global market. ECHO will lead to a completely new approach to the hammering process in mining and provides an innovative, cost-effective, digitised, connected, safe, environmentally friendly and user-friendly solution.
