C-SINK Organises a Workshop on Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage in Stockholm
On 27 and 28 May, the C-SINK project held its workshop on Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and the M36 General Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden. The event brought together experts, researchers and industry representatives. Over the course of two working days, participants examined the challenges and opportunities associated with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in Europe, with particular emphasis on the role that BECCS technology can play in achieving European climate objectives.

A Forum to Discuss the Future of BECCS in Europe
Hosted at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the workshop brought together more than 60 participants from academia, industry and public institutions. The event was structured around four thematic sessions covering the entire BECCS value chain and addressing key aspects such as use cases, assessment methodologies, public acceptance, governance frameworks and the support mechanisms required for large-scale deployment.
One of the workshop’s central themes was the analysis of assessment methodologies applied to BECCS projects, including life cycle assessments (LCA), the quantification of negative emissions and the management of uncertainties associated with the technology.
Among the main conclusions was the importance of fostering coordinated action across public policy, infrastructure development and investment, as well as establishing harmonised regulatory frameworks at the European level to enable responsible and scalable deployment.

M36 General Assembly: Reviewing Project Progress
The second day was dedicated to the C-SINK M36 General Assembly. Consortium partners reviewed the progress achieved over recent months and coordinated the next stages of the project.
The meeting provided an opportunity to align objectives, share preliminary results and strengthen collaboration among the participating organisations, thereby consolidating a common vision of the role of carbon removal technologies within Europe’s climate strategy.

Visit to One of Europe’s Most Advanced BECCS Facilities
To conclude the event, participants visited the Stockholm Exergi facility, currently under construction and regarded as one of the most advanced BECCS projects in Europe. The plant is expected to achieve a carbon removal capacity of 800,000 tonnes of negative emissions per year from 2028 onwards, establishing itself as a benchmark for the industrial deployment of this technology.
