ISMC at the EIT RawMaterials Summit 2026: innovation, digitalisation and sustainability for the future of critical raw materials in Europe
Last Wednesday, Brussels hosted a new edition of the EIT RawMaterials Summit 2026, one of the most significant international events for the critical raw materials sector in Europe.
In this context, the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) took an active role in the parallel session entitled “Reimagining Mineral Exploration: Digital, Sustainable & Responsible Solutions for Europe”, organised in collaboration with the ESMIN platform and supported by several leading European projects.
A European platform for rethinking mineral exploration
The session brought together pioneering initiatives that are redefining the future of mineral exploration in Europe through the use of advanced technologies, collaborative approaches, and a strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
The participating projects included:
- DEXPLORE EU Project (coordinated by ISMC)
During the presentations, key technologies such as AI-assisted prospectivity modelling, Earth observation, UAV applications, advanced geophysics, and the development of digital twins were discussed, demonstrating how these tools are accelerating more efficient, accurate, and sustainable exploration practices.

DeepBEAT
During the session, DeepBEAT presented its integrated approach to deep exploration of critical raw materials, highlighting the combined use of advanced geochemistry, AI-assisted 3D modelling, and low-impact techniques. Particular emphasis was placed on how these methods can reduce the environmental footprint of exploration while improving the accuracy of identifying new resources. The importance of integrating the social dimension from the earliest project stages was also discussed.
DEXPLORE
DEXPLORE shared progress in integrating Earth observation technologies, deep geophysics, and UAV-assisted detection for the identification of mineral deposits at significant depth. During the session, the project highlighted the development of its digital data and visualisation platform, designed to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders and accelerate the joint interpretation of complex geological information.
GAIA-TSF
GAIA-TSF presented its approach to the continuous monitoring of tailings storage facilities through the use of artificial intelligence and Earth observation data. The session explored use cases in which the system has enabled the detection of potential anomalies and improved understanding of the behaviour of these infrastructures at multiple scales, thereby strengthening safety and environmental management within the mining sector.
GoldenRAM
GoldenRAM presented the results of its European pilot projects, in which an AI-based Earth observation platform has been validated. During the event, the project demonstrated how the integration of satellite, geological, and analytical data improves decision-making in exploration and monitoring, while also optimising the sustainable management of critical raw materials across different European geological contexts.
MultiMiner
MultiMiner presented its multi-source and multi-scale approach to mining exploration and monitoring, demonstrating how the combination of satellite data, drones, airborne sensors, and in situ measurements, together with machine learning algorithms, is enabling the identification of concealed mineral resources and improving environmental monitoring of mining sites throughout their entire lifecycle.

The role of ISMC: innovation and collaboration for responsible mining
Representing the Cluster, Laura Quijano participated as a speaker, presenting ISMC’s work in promoting innovation, fostering collaboration among European stakeholders, and advancing responsible mining practices.
Her presentation highlighted the importance of strengthening Europe’s critical raw materials value chains by promoting a more sustainable, digitalised, and socially accepted model of exploration and extraction.
The event also served as a strategic networking platform with other actors within the European ecosystem, facilitating knowledge exchange and the creation of new synergies between projects, industry, and research organisations.
Technologies transforming mineral exploration
Discussions throughout the session highlighted a clear consensus: technological innovation is a key driver for the future of the sector. Among the most significant trends identified were:
