RESILEX workshop in Brussels to explore circular solutions for Europe’s critical raw materials
On 19 May 2026, Brussels will host the workshop “Blueprint for sovereignty? Critical raw materials, PV and batteries: opportunities for the EU”, organised in the framework of the European project RESILEX, in which the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster | ISMC participates.
The event, co-organised by SolarPower Europe, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies and ISMC, will bring together key stakeholders from industry, research and policymaking to address one of the most pressing challenges facing Europe’s energy transition: securing a sustainable and resilient supply of critical raw materials.
Advancing Europe’s strategic autonomy through circular solutions
As the demand for clean energy technologies accelerates, so does the need for critical raw materials. Photovoltaic panels and battery value chains are at the core of this transformation, making it essential to reduce dependencies on external supply sources while strengthening Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
In this context, the RESILEX workshop will provide a platform to explore how circular approaches and innovation can contribute to reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy. Discussions will focus on:
- Reducing reliance on non-EU supply chains
- Promoting innovation in material recovery and circularity
- Enhancing the competitiveness of the European clean-tech sector
- Bridging industry needs with EU policymaking processes
From mining waste to new battery materials
The workshop agenda will present concrete technological solutions and case studies developed within the RESILEX project and beyond. These include the recovery of critical raw materials from mining waste, the recycling and eco-design of photovoltaic panels, and the development of new material streams for batteries.
A particular focus will be placed on the valorisation of silicon recovered from end-of-life PV panels as active material for lithium-ion batteries, highlighting the potential of circular value chains to create new industrial opportunities in Europe.
A multi-stakeholder dialogue at European level
The event will feature expert panels with representatives from leading organisations such as SolarPower Europe, the Global Battery Alliance and the Becquerel Institute, fostering a policy-oriented dialogue aimed at translating industrial and technological insights into actionable recommendations for European decision-makers.
From ISMC, Laura Quijano will participate in the opening session, reinforcing the cluster’s commitment to driving sustainable and resilient raw materials value chains across Europe.
