ISMC drives European collaboration on raw materials through the 2nd TERRAVISION Clustering Event in Seville
On 11 February, the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) hosted in Seville the 2nd TERRAVISION Clustering Event, a key session aimed at strengthening collaboration among European projects focused on strategic raw materials, technological innovation and sustainability in the mining sector.
Held in the framework of the TERRAVISION project meetings, the event brought together experts, institutions and EU-funded initiatives with the objective of identifying synergies, sharing knowledge and advancing towards a more integrated and resilient European ecosystem.
A platform for collaboration across European projects
The afternoon session (14:30 – 16:00) was opened by Clara Balbín (ISMC), who welcomed participants and highlighted the role of clustering as a key tool to maximise the impact of European projects.
This was followed by Chrysoula Papathanasiou (ICCS), who provided an overview of the TERRAVISION project, outlining its progress and its contribution to the development of innovative, data-driven solutions for the raw materials sector.
One of the highlights of the session was the contribution of Eleftheria Poyiadji (EuroGeoSurveys), who presented the GEO community activities in the field of Earth Observation, underlining the importance of geoscientific data for strategic decision-making in Europe.
Synergies across projects: from exploration to technological innovation
The event also served as a platform to showcase other relevant European projects contributing to the advancement of the sector:
- GoldenRAM, presented by Marko Savolainen (VTT), focusing on advanced solutions for raw materials management.
- MINEYE, an initiative centred on innovative technologies for mineral exploration.
- GAIA-TSF, a project dedicated to the monitoring of mining facilities through Earth Observation and artificial intelligence technologies.
These presentations enabled participants to identify complementarities between initiatives, fostering the exchange of experiences and opening the door to future collaborations.
ISMC, fostering cooperation within the European raw materials ecosystem
The session concluded with a Q&A and discussion moderated by Laura Quijano (ISMC), addressing common challenges in the sector as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation among projects and key stakeholders.
By organising this clustering event, ISMC reinforces its role as a key facilitator within the European raw materials ecosystem, promoting innovation, sustainability and interregional collaboration in line with European Union priorities.

The importance of clustering in the European context
In a context marked by the growing demand for critical raw materials and the need to ensure Europe’s strategic autonomy, initiatives such as this are essential to:
- Prevent fragmentation of efforts
- Align EU-funded projects
- Accelerate knowledge and technology transfer
- Strengthen European value chains
The 2nd TERRAVISION Clustering Event stands as a strong example of best practice in building a more innovative, digital and sustainable mining sector.
