GAIA-TSF at the EUSPA AI Week: Artificial intelligence and space data for safer mining

Artificial intelligence (AI) and space data are increasingly becoming strategic tools to address some of Europe’s major industrial and environmental challenges. In this context, the GAIA-TSF project, coordinated by Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC), recently took part in the EUSPA AI Week, a flagship event organised by the EUSPA – EU Agency for the Space Programme.

A European forum for AI with real-world impact

The EUSPA AI Week brings together public authorities, industry and the research community to explore how AI can move beyond innovation and deliver real-world impact. The event highlights concrete AI applications, promotes cross-sector collaboration and emphasises the responsible and trustworthy use of AI technologies, in line with European values and with a strong focus on safety-critical and high-impact domains.

Geospatial AI for mining infrastructure safety

During the session, GAIA-TSF showcased its innovative approach to the monitoring and safety of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). The project combines geospatial AI with satellite-based Earth Observation, integrating InSAR, optical and multispectral data with machine-learning models.

This approach supports the development of early-warning systems capable of detecting ground instabilities and environmental risks, enabling proactive, data-driven risk management in the mining sector. The outcome contributes to safer infrastructures, enhanced environmental protection and improved decision-making.

Events such as the EUSPA AI Week clearly illustrate how AI powered by space data can move from concept to implementation, delivering tangible benefits for industry and society. From space to the ground, technology is opening new pathways towards safer, more resilient and more sustainable mining operations.
