The Municipality of Mieres supports the Asturian Sustainable Mining Node of the ISMC Cluster

Mieres strengthens its position as a reference in sustainable and technologically advanced mining, joining forces with the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC).

The Municipality of Mieres, led by its Mayor Manuel Ángel Álvarez, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable mining and to the economic transformation of the mining regions through its support to the Asturian Sustainable Mining Node of the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC).

Earlier this week, representatives of the local council met with the ISMC management team —Santiago Cuesta López, General Director of ISMC; Patricia Núñez, Head of Institutional Relations; María Gutiérrez, Marketing Manager at Grupo HUNOSA; and Juan María Menéndez Aguado, Professor at the University of Oviedo— to discuss the challenges and opportunities that this node represents for the region, as well as new paths for institutional collaboration.

The meeting focused on how the establishment of the Asturian Sustainable Mining Node can act as a catalyst for innovation, sustainability and digitalisation projects linked to the raw materials sector and to the Just Energy Transition.

In the afternoon, during the official presentation of the node, Mayor Manuel Ángel Álvarez highlighted the importance of institutional cooperation between public administrations, universities and the private sector to promote research, innovation, and specialised training in the mining field. He also emphasised that this initiative will serve as a reference platform for developing projects with a real impact on the industrial and social fabric of the Principality of Asturias.

The ISMC warmly welcomes the commitment of the Municipality of Mieres in promoting this new node, which strengthens Asturias as a key actor in the transition towards a sustainable, digital and competitive industrial model.

About the Asturian Node of ISMC

The Asturian Node of the ISMC Cluster is part of the territorial network of hubs within the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster, which brings together companies, research centres, universities, and public authorities to accelerate innovation in sustainable mining across the Iberian Peninsula.

These regional nodes aim to foster local innovation, promote economic diversification, and strengthen public–private cooperation in areas such as circular economy, resource efficiency, and the green transition.
