ISMC at EUROSOIL 2025: innovation in carbon removal and soil restoration
From 8 to 12 September, Seville hosted EUROSOIL 2025, the leading international congress on soil science and sustainable land management. With more than 1,100 communications from 45 countries, the event brought together scientists, policymakers, businesses, and professionals to address the global challenges of soil management and its crucial role in tackling the climate crisis.

Following a rigorous review process, the Scientific Committee selected 370 oral presentations distributed across six parallel thematic sessions. EUROSOIL 2025 also featured seven plenary lectures by internationally renowned experts and a broad programme of open workshops, including the 5th EUSO Stakeholders Forum and the presentation of the Status of the World’s Soil Resources Report 2025 (FAO-GSP).
ISMC’s contribution at EUROSOIL 2025
The Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) was represented by our colleagues Laura Quijano and Catalina Hernández, who shared insights from the European C-SINK project (Horizon Europe). This consortium, involving 24 organisations from 11 countries, explores how combining different carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies can accelerate the transition towards climate neutrality in Europe by 2050.

Their presentation, “Synergies Between Carbon Dioxide Removal Approaches for Ecosystem Benefits”, highlighted the importance of integrating nature-based solutions with technological and hybrid approaches to strengthen carbon sequestration while enhancing soil health.
Key insights presented in Seville
The need for a holistic framework that links decarbonisation, food security, adaptation, and biodiversity.
Assessment of seven CDR technologies: Afforestation, Biochar, Biochar with CCS, Bioenergy with CCS, Enhanced Weathering, Artificial Soils, and Biological CO₂ Fixation.
A particularly promising synergy: Afforestation + Biochar + BECCS, offering strong potential for carbon capture, renewable energy production, and soil restoration.
The C-SINK project is contributing to the development of monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) pre-standards and policy strategies to enable scalable and reliable implementation of CDR in Europe.
ISMC’s commitment to sustainable mining
ISMC’s participation in EUROSOIL 2025 reinforces our commitment to sustainable mining, soil restoration, and innovation in climate action. From Seville, we contributed to knowledge exchange and collaboration, ensuring that soil science remains a cornerstone of the transition towards a sustainable, resilient, and climate-neutral future.
