ISMC to host the GAIA‑TSF workshop in Seville: innovation in tailings monitoring with satellite technologies and machine learning

On 10 September 2025, the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) will host the GAIA‑TSF Stakeholder Workshop in Seville, bringing together experts, institutions and industry representatives to explore the latest advances in Earth observation (EO) and machine learning (ML) for monitoring tailings storage facilities (TSF).
Venue: Hotel Occidental Sevilla Viapol, Seville
Schedule: 09:00–19:00
Free registration (mandatory; in‑person places limited to 40)
The workshop forms part of the European GAIA‑TSF project, an initiative developing a continuous, multi‑scale monitoring system for mining waste storage facilities. By combining satellite data with AI‑driven analytics, the project aims to detect early warning signals of instability, environmental degradation or potential failure.
Programme highlights
The day will feature technical talks, interactive panels and networking opportunities. Contributors include Junta de Andalucía, Cybele, Tharsis Mining, Matsa Resources Limited, TU Delft, University of the Witwatersrand, Czech Technical University and the european project TERRAVISION, alongside key public and private stakeholders from the mining ecosystem.
Key topics include:
Best operational practices and critical variables for TSF monitoring
Applications of InSAR, optical imaging, thermal and multispectral sensors
Predictive modelling with machine learning
Technological innovation and opportunities to valorise tailings
Institutional and industry perspectives on environmental monitoring challenges
A poster gallery will showcase relevant projects, and an open discussion will encourage knowledge exchange among all participants.
A milestone for sustainable mining
The GAIA‑TSF Stakeholder Workshop offers a strategic platform to advance safer, more efficient and more sustainable management of mining waste, strengthening collaboration between science, industry and public authorities.
