S34I Final Event in Vigo: ISMC Wraps Up a Key European Project on Critical Raw Materials

The city of Vigo hosted the final events of the European project S34I – Secure and Sustainable Supply of Raw Materials for EU Industry, co-organised by ISMC from 11 to 13 June 2025. The meetings brought together over 50 international experts and marked the conclusion of a three-year effort to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions for the future of raw materials supply in Europe.

Three Days of Collaboration: Sustainability, Innovation, and European Cooperation

Held at the prestigious Museo do Mar de Galicia, the event featured a comprehensive three-day programme combining internal reviews with a high-impact public conference:

11 June: General Assembly and Final Project Review

The first day was dedicated to the General Assembly and Final Review, where consortium partners presented the major outcomes of each work package. ISMC highlighted the key results of Work Package 6, focused on communication, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement. The day concluded with a field visit to the Vao Beach pilot site, part of the project’s activities in the Ría de Vigo.

12 de junio: S34I Final Conference – “From Sky to Soil: Exploring Earth. Empowering Europe”

The second day featured the project’s Final Conference, open to the public, policy makers, and stakeholders across the raw materials and mining sectors. The agenda included:

Presentations from aligned EU projects such as M4Mining, GAIA TSF, GoldenRAM, Terravision, Undercover, and Fierce.
A keynote by Dr Arnoldus M. van den Hurk, international expert in critical raw materials and sustainable development.
High-level contributions from the European Commission (DG GROW), Cobre San Rafael, AIMEN, the Official Mining Chamber of Galicia, and academia.
Two roundtables addressing the future of exploration and sustainability in mining.

13 June: Field Visit to the Ría de Vigo and Cíes Islands

The final day included a hands-on technical visit to the Cíes Islands and local mussel farms, offering a real-world glimpse into the pilot area’s environmental and operational context. A fitting conclusion to a project dedicated to sustainability and impact.

S34I: European Innovation for Sustainable Mining

Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, the S34I project focused on integrating Earth observation technologies, geospatial modelling, field trials, and digital solutions for the sustainable exploration and management of critical raw materials. Its main objective: to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy and reduce dependence on third-country suppliers.
