Andalusia leads Spain’s mining sector and strengthens its role in the energy transition
Andalusia consolidates its leadership in Spain’s mining sector, as confirmed by the latest 2023 Mining Statistics Report, which identifies the region as the top performer in terms of production value.
According to official data, Andalusia accounts for 34% of the total value of Spain’s mining production, a figure that reflects the strength of its metallic mining industry. Alongside Catalonia and Castile and León, it represents nearly 60% of the national mining output, highlighting Spain’s rich and diverse geological landscape.
Furthermore, the Andalusian subsoil contains 22 of the 34 critical raw materials identified by the European Union as essential for the energy and digital transition, including copper, tungsten, manganese, silicon and bismuth. This makes Andalusia a strategic hub for securing the supply of raw materials vital to sustainable industrial development and Europe’s technological independence.
The mining sector in Andalusia is not only significant from an economic and geopolitical perspective, but also socially. It generates over 8,600 direct jobs and is increasingly defined by its commitment to innovation, sustainability and industrial safety.
“Mining in Andalusia is not merely an economic driver; it is a lever for transforming our economy towards a greener, more autonomous and resilient model,” says Santiago Cuesta López, Director General of ISMC.
At ISMC, we strongly support a modern, sustainable and responsible mining model, capable of contributing to industrial and technological development while upholding the highest environmental and social standards.
Andalusia’s mining sector is both present and future
At a crucial time for energy sovereignty and digital transformation, Andalusia is positioning itself as a key pillar of Spain and Europe’s economic, industrial and environmental development.
