European Commission Grants Strategic Project Status to Seven Mining Initiatives in Spain

 

The European Commission has granted Strategic Project designation to seven mining initiatives in Spain under Regulation (EU) 2024/1252. This decision, outlined in Decision C (2025) 1904 final, underscores the importance of these projects in the extraction, processing, and recycling of critical raw materials essential for the European Union’s strategic autonomy.

Recognition by the European Commission

The recognition of these projects represents a key endorsement for Spain’s mining and raw materials industry. Being designated as Strategic Projects entails streamlined administrative processes, potential access to financial incentives, and acknowledgment of their crucial role in the EU’s green and digital transition.

The Seven Strategic Projects in Spain

The selected projects involve various essential raw materials for industry and technological innovation. They are:

  • Aguablanca Project – Río Narcea Recursos (Spain)

  • CirCular – Atlantic Copper (Spain)

  • Las Navas – Lithium Iberia (Spain)

  • Mina Doade Project – Recursos Minerales de Galicia (Spain)

  • Mining Project El Moto – Abenójar Tungsten (Spain)

  • P6 Metals – Iberian Resources Spain (Spain)

  • Polymetallic Primary Sulphite Project – Cobre Las Cruces (Spain)

Impact on the Mining Industry and Green Transition

These projects make a significant contribution to securing the supply of critical raw materials in Europe, reducing import dependence and promoting sustainable industrial development. The efficient extraction and processing of minerals such as lithium, copper, and tungsten are fundamental for manufacturing batteries, semiconductors, and other key technologies in the energy transition.

The designation of these seven projects as strategic strengthens Spain’s position as a key player in Europe’s raw materials value chain. This support from the European Commission provides a boost to the mining sector and the national economy, aligning with the sustainability and innovation goals of the European Green Deal.
