Mining in Spain in 2023: challenges and opportunities in a transforming sector
Mining in Spain closed the year 2023 with figures reflecting both the challenges and opportunities of the sector. The 2023 Spanish Mining Statistics report, published by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, reveals a decline in mining production value, although employment growth and an increasing relevance in strategic raw materials for Europe were also observed.
The value of national mining production reached €3.571 million, representing a 9.3% decrease compared to 2022. This decline is mainly due to fluctuations in mineral prices and the impact of rising energy costs. In particular, metallic mining, which accounts for 27% of the sector’s total, recorded a 15% drop in value, affecting key minerals such as copper, zinc, and tungsten, although there were signs of recovery in steel iron production.
Despite the drop in production, employment in the mining sector grew by 4.1% in 2023, reaching 30,239 direct jobs. However, 75% of mining operations have fewer than 10 workers, reflecting the sector’s fragmentation.
In the European context, Spain stands out for its production of critical raw materials. It is the only producer of strontium in Europe and the second-largest copper producer on the continent. With the growing demand for strategic raw materials, the Spanish mining sector plays a key role in the European Union’s industrial autonomy.
Looking ahead, the dual ecological and digital transition reinforces the need for self-sufficient and sustainable resources. Mining in Spain faces the challenge of adapting to these changes, ensuring its competitiveness and contributing to the sustainability of the European industrial model.
